With the invention of laser hair removal, painful hair removal methods such as shaving, tweezing, or waxing are slowly being replaced. The procedure involves beaming highly concentrated light into hair follicles. The pigment in the follicles absorbs the light, which destroys the hair. While it is useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, and other areas, lasers specifically target coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.

However, laser hair removal is a medical procedure that requires training to perform and can carry potential risks by an untrained hand. So, before you schedule your first appointment, we at Advance Laser Clinic have compiled a list of common mistakes people make when getting laser hair removal treatments that you should avoid.

1. Not talking to the expert beforehand
When choosing a laser hair removal device for treatments, a light sheer diode is a true laser, but people choose IPL and only realize later when they don’t get the desired results. People usually call and ask for prices for laser treatments, but it’s very important to ask your laser provider which technology they are going to use.

2. Expecting to be hair free after the first session
Many patients think that they will be dramatically hair-free after the first session. But laser hair removal is a process of treatments where your hair is being destroyed only in the anagen phase (full-grown root). On the body, 25% to 30% of hair is in the anagen phase at any time. That’s why multiple treatments are needed for optimum results depending on skin type, hair type, and hormonal conditions.

3. Not being consistent with their treatments
We follow the growth cycle to provide follow-up laser treatments. Sometimes patients don’t understand that and miss or ignore the instructions. But to achieve the best results in the shortest time, it’s very important to follow the recommended treatment schedules suggested by your laser therapist.

4. Using laser treatment on unprotected sun exposure or tanned skin
It’s not safe to laser on unprotected sun-exposed skin. Because the laser targets the pigment of the hair and sun-tanned skin can affect the treatment. If the skin has been exposed to the sun, even if the color of the skin is not very much changed, the melanocytes may have been activated, attracting laser energy and can thus lead to burning of the skin. Laser therapists always discuss the potential before and after dos and don’ts, so never ignore it.

5. Denying to have shaved thread, tweeze or wax the area before the laser treatment
Sometimes patients believe the myth that shaving will cause hair to become thicker and more visible. But for laser hair removal treatments, we need the hair at the anagen stage(full-grown root), and threading, waxing, or tweezing forfeits the purpose of the treatment. It’s strongly advised not to thread, wax or tweeze the hair before or in between the treatments. Rather, cleanly shaved skin leads to more effective treatments and less painful experiences. For maintenance in between the treatments, it’s recommended to just shave or use scissors to cut the hair or use cream hair depilatories.

6. Ignoring hormonal imbalance issues
Many times people tend to ignore the hormonal imbalance in their body and don’t understand the effect of this condition for better hair removal results. Excessive hair growth is a result of hormonal imbalance. If someone has excessive hair growth, it’s advised to get a medical evaluation before starting the laser treatments and start medically required treatments along with the laser hair removal treatments. PCOS, irregular mensuration cycle, post-menopausal stage, and family history of hirsutism are the main reasons for sudden hair growth and acne problems. In our clinic, we always take care of this situation very keenly.
